Heightened security planned for this year’s Farnborough
Farnborough International 2002, being held on July 22-28, will have a heightened level of security due to the increased global threat from terrorism.

Farnborough International 2002, being held on July 22-28, will have a heightened level of security due to the increased global threat from terrorism.

There will be a reduction in the number of vehicles entering the site, as far as is reasonably practicable, with some vehicles and personnel subject to a search. The main effect will be reduced car parking space available to exhibitors. To counter this, additional space a short distance off-site will be provided and free shuttle buses will be in operation. Other measures include the use of sophisticated detection equipment at all pedestrian entrance points.

David Marshall, director general of the show organiser The Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), said: “The SBAC regrets any inconvenience the enhanced security measures may have on visitors.

However, we hope that those affected appreciate that in the current climate these are necessary measures which are in place to ensure everything possible is done for us to all have a safe show.” Space for this year’s event was sold out before the end of 2001 and there is still a waiting list.

The first show of the millennium broke all previous records as companies attending the event announced sales and contracts totalling $52 billion. Over 1,200 exhibitors from 30 countries exhibited in five halls and were visited by 303,000 trade and public visitors.
