As part of the FBO and Corporate Handling Survey for this year EBAN investigated how the Europeans’ security measures have been affected since September 11.

Many respondents reported increased safeguards and safety procedures. Popular implement-ations have been strict baggage screening and the employment of guards. As well as these, for example, Execair Edinburgh has local police authority presence at its GA site and Marshall Aerospace’s security staff at Cambridge received extra training in baggage and aircraft searching.

In addition to complying with all the requirements of the National Aviation Security Programme, London Biggin Hill provides extra in-house measures such as car searches to provide additional peace of mind.

Zimex Flight Support of Switzerland has a security company to protect the aircraft 24 hours, and also video cameras on the tarmac. John Suggett, general manager at Samson Aviation in Newcastle, reported that all US registered aircraft are guarded round the clock and others on request.

Some FBOs were already prepared, Cristobal Garcia Die of United Aviation Services in Madrid said: “Spain has been a country with a terrorist problem for 30 years, we are very well prepared to fight against them.”

Similarly, TAG Aviation Berlin is primed for such activity as its Tempelhof Airport base was run by the US military and with security being very good there, no changes were required.

Others remained more reticent, Universal Aviation France reports that it has improved and added security but cannot publish them or else they would become obsolete.

Eindhoven Handling reported a lot of measures at first with extra security equipment and airport police, but for the moment things have gone back to normal.
