Minister commends Biggin Hill staff in adversity

The UK’s minister for transport John Spellar recently visited London Biggin Hill Airport to present the airport team with a commendation for “outstanding professionalism and skill” demonstrated in dealing with three separate aircraft accidents at this summer’s tragic Air Fair in June, in particular two fatal accidents.

The minister heaped praise upon the staff from across all aspects of the airport operations including handling agents, air traffic controllers and fire fighters, praising their training and compassion. He commented: “No one can fail to be impressed with the professionalism shown by the emergency services at Biggin Hill.”

Airport director Peter Lonergan concluded: “We have long known that we have a professional team here, but this recognition from the minister himself proves that they are very special. We are proud to accept this high praise and I know it means a lot to the staff too as this was a very difficult time for us all.”

Meanwhile Julie Black has been promoted to marketing and customer services manager at the airport.

Black (29) came to Biggin Hill in November 1998 to single-handedly set up a marketing department. In the newly created role her responsibilities will be expanded to encompass the corporate aircraft handling team, catering, reception and retail duties at Biggin Hill as well as managing the revenue budget for Northolt.
