A business jet has sold for $4.9 million on eBay, reportedly setting a record for the highest known sale price for any single item achieved on the online marketplace.

A business jet has sold for $4.9 million on eBay, reportedly setting a record for the highest known sale price for any single item achieved on the online marketplace. It is more than three times the previous known eBay record of $1.65 million and is also one of the highest on the Internet.

Owned by Texas-based Tyler Jet, the Gulfstream II jet is configured to seat twelve passengers. The buyer is a charter aircraft company located in Africa.

The Gulfstream II jet was one of several items listed for sale on eBay’s new aviation category, which was launched late last month. Located at www.ebay.com/aviation, the site also listed a Hawker and Citation III, as well as special interest aircraft once owned by celebrities such as the late John F. Kennedy, Jr. and actor John Travolta. Michael Barnes of Barnes & Co. in St. Louis produced the sale.

In addition to aircraft, the new eBay aviation category also lists engines, parts, avionics equipment, pilot gear, clothing and memorabilia.
