Cirrus Design Corporation and the engine manufacturer SMA have agreed to develop a Cirrus SR-series aircraft using the SMA SR-305 turbo-diesel engine. First customer deliveries are expected in 2002.

The aircraft to be developed will be a derivative of the Cirrus model SR22. The SR22, along with the SR20, was dispayed at the Aero Exhibition at Friedrichshafen airport in Germany.

Cirrus president Alan Klapmeier said: “The new aircraft, currently dubbed the SR21tdi is initially being developed exclusively for our European customers.

“Along with the, unfortunately somewhat protracted, discussions with JAA and other authorities, this is one more step towards satisfying customer needs in Europe and elsewhere.”

While detailed specifications will not be complete for several months, the aircraft is expected to offer SR22-like performance at higher altitudes on significantly lower fuel burn. Offering performance in excess of 170 knots at 12,000 feet, the SR22 is said to offer the most comfortable cabin in any personal aircraft. The turbo-diesel engine is fueled by Jet-A.

Bill Middendorp, president of General Enterprises (Cirrus authorised sales agent for Europe) added: “The European market has been waiting for this aircraft for years. This is likely to become the Cirrus flagship product in Europe.”
