Old Sarum – the only licensed aerodrome in Wiltshire and the second oldest active airfield in the UK – is under threat from property developers. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) is helping to oppose the plan.

Developers have applied to build on part of the aircraft manoeuvring area which would sever access between the active aerodrome and the hangars.

Also part of the existing grass runway would be closed which would preclude continuation of pilot training and restrict operations to helicopters and microlights.

The local council has refused outline planning permission, however, the developers launched

an appeal against the decision in February.

The Inspector’s decision will not be known for several months.
