Biggin Hill is launch pad for UK/Australia air race
London’s Biggin Hill airport will be the starting point for next year’s London/Sidney Centenary Air Race 2001.

London’s Biggin Hill airport will be the starting point for next year’s London/Sidney Centenary Air

Race 2001.

A total of 47 entries – ranging from a Tiger Moth to a twin engine jet and even a helicopter – have been received for the race, part of Australia’s plans to celebrate the Centenary of the Federation in 2001.

The race leaves Biggin Hill on March 11 and passes through France, Egypt, Pakistan and Indonesia en route to Australia.

Race chief executive Wilf Barker commented that the airport’s facilities were ideal for the lead-up to and start of the event – for the requirements of the pilots and crews, its proximity to London and accessibility to the public.

Early October saw a special event take place at Biggin Hill airport – eight families with children who have life- threatening illnesses were provided with a day of entertainment organised by charity organisation, Cherished Memories.

The activities on offer included flights over London and helicopter rides over Brands Hatch motor

racing circuit.

The airport’s personnel got involved to offer the local airfield as a facility, other participating local companies included Biggin Hill Helicopters and the Private Owners Association.
