The FAA has awarded New Piper Aircraft Inc. the type certificate for its Malibu Meridian PA46-500TP single engine turboprop.
The Meridian is powered by a Pratt and Whitney Canada PTA6A-42A turboprop engine producing 500 shaft horsepower, and incorporates advanced avionics display and navigation systems. The six-seater is priced at approximately $1.5 million, is designed to be owner flown and cruises at more than 300mph.
"We have listened to our customers, ultimately delivering the performance, technology and features they have demanded," said Chuck Suma, president and ceo of New Piper.
To enable New Piper to deliver Meridians concurrently with certification, the company began production in early 2000, and delivered the first aircraft to its customer in early October. The company has received 135 wholesale orders, representing 105 retail sales from customers in eleven countries. To accommodate what it says is high market demand, New Piper will build 35 Meridians in 2000, accelerating its production rate to more than 100 aircraft in 2001.
