The US FAA is to impose temporary flight restrictions (TFR) over New York City, Washington, DC and Somerset County, Pennsylvania at varying times from September 11-13, 2002, during the anniversary of last year’s terrorist attacks.
In its initial statement, the FAA noted the closures were primarily meant to safeguard ceremonies at the crash sites.
The TFRs extend to all general aviation (Part 91 and Part 135) operations within the planned 30-mile TFRs over each location with surface to Flight Level 180. Consequently this will ground all general aviation operations at the primary airports within that region. For New York, this includes JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Teterboro and White Plains airports.
In the Washington D.C. area, Baltimore-Washington International and Washington Dulles International will be affected, in addition to continuing restrictions at Reagan National Airport.
All VFR operations will be prohibited within the restricted areas as well.
