Funchal Airport gains runway extension and new terminal
An extension to the runway and new terminal at Madeira's airport in Funchal, opened on September 15, 2000. Nearly 1,000 metres has been added to the runway, allowing larger aircraft on to the island and an increase in capacity - in addition, its alignment has been changed by over three degrees to improve the approach. The new terminal is already improving facilities at the airport but will not be fully completed until 2002. A series of events was arranged around the opening which included a performance by Dame Kiri te Kanawa and a concert by Jose Carreras.
