SPX fits the bill for Austrian air ambulance provider
Vienna-based Austrian Air Ambulance has welcomed the arrival of its new aircraft, the Astra SPX. With a range that reaches most destinations in the former Eastern Block countries, the Gulf region and Central Africa non-stop, the company says the SPX fulfils all the new JAR-OPS requirements.

Managing director Gerhard Flekatsch told EBAN: "We chose the Astra SPX because it is the most suitable type of aircraft for our purposes. It will serve as a dedicated ambulance aircraft target for medium and long-range flights, as well as for shorter distances for customers who want cabin space, medical safety and high quality operation.

Despite the aircraft being brand new, the company says it will offer its services at a lower price than with other comparable aircraft. Flekatsch added: "We have detected an increasing demand not only for longer range capabilities - we are able to fly to Tokyo, Bangkok, Brazil or Minneapolis with only one stop - but also for a roomier cabin for accompanying persons and luggage.

"Prompt arrival at a given destination seems to be as important to customers as a smooth flight with fewer fuel stops and quick turn-arounds."

With regard to the new JAA requirements, Flekatsch said its SPX comes right up to scratch. He said: "The new JAA regulations and the RVSM requirements on North Atlantic routes made it difficult to find an appropriate aircraft. Very soon the new European standards for air, water and difficult terrain ambulances will go into effect.

"The Astra SPX fulfils all these requirements and offers additional benefits for the safety and comfort of your customers."With air ambulance operations dating back to 1976, Austrian Air Ambulance believes it is probably the only air ambulance company worldwide that currently has a DIN ISO 9002 certified quality management system.
