For European charter customers tempted by the lure of the Falcon 900, the Dornier 328Jet and a couple of Citation models, Tyrolean Jet Service (TJS) might just be the ticket. Based in Innsbruck, the company is owned by the Swarovski group of companies and has been in existence for more than 20 years. Martin Lener, managing director, spoke to EBAN, firstly about TJS's involvement with Citation aircraft. \rHe said: "We've been flying with Citations for the best part of 25 years, always with different models. The 501 has a very low range, and is good for shorter range trips within Europe, for example Innsbruck to Paris, and Innsbruck to Frankfurt. It carries six passengers and has a new interior.\r"The 560 can fly nonstop to London City and we often fly to the London area, to Biggin to Farnborough, even to Heathrow to get connection flights with Concorde, in case the Falcon 900 is busy.\r"It's a small aircraft with very low fuselage diameter, but the perfect trip for it is Innsbruck to Paris, which we fly frequently. Both Citations have a very good shortfield performance. In the past, with a few stops, we've even flown to the Canary Islands and to Egypt."\rLener says that all its aircraft are used for corporate travel only. The company's first duty is to Swarovski, the maker of crystal items which may be found at airports throughout Europe. With much trade worldwide, Swarovski has a large amount of corporate travel demands and to this end, makes ample use of the Falcon 900, Citation V and on occasions, the Dornier 328Jet. \rTJS's Falcon 2000 is operated as part of an aircraft management project. Lener said: " The aircraft is operated on behalf of the owner of this aircraft, who I can tell you is the former Formula 1 driver, Gerhardt Berger. He is now the managing director of BMW motorsport, which is in cooperation with Williams. He flies relatively frequently and we have set up a system which works for him. \r"We are also working on having the Falcon 2000 available for charter, and certification is in progress at present. It has the same size cabin as the Falcon 900, and I think we will be successful in offering this aircraft to our customers."\rTyrolean Jet Service is used by many a charter broker in the London area for the hire of its Falcon 900, Dornier 328Jet, "and even the Citation V". The 328Jet, it appears, has become very successful in the charter arena. Lener told EBAN: "We are doing charter business for more than 90 per cent of its complete utilisation. It is hired by very important German industrial companies and we are proud to tell you that we are flying frequently for Volkswagen and for BMW.\r"We have the best utilisation in our fleet with this aircraft and have very little competition for it." \rTJS's Dornier 328Jet may be operated as an airliner with 30 passengers and as an executive aircraft, with four first class seats and 15 airline seats. Lener said: "Our first reason to operate this aircraft is of course the corporate flight department of Swarovski, but we are also very busy on the charter market."\rIt appears that roughly two thirds of the companies who use the 328Jet, use it in its airline configuration. The other third, made up partly of fashion and show business personalities, takes the executive option. Lener said: "We have flown Tina Turner \ron a return trip from England to France return, and she was really satisfied. While we have a lot of other people from the showbiz world, she is probably the most famous among them."\rWith ample baggage area, Lener says the 328Jet is a very capable, dependable aircraft. In addition, the company receives excellent support from Dornier, whose facilities are located just outside nearby Munich.\r One area where the 328Jet could be said to be lacking, is in range. However, while the current range of TJS's 328Jet is a realistic 1,100 miles, the company has already purchased and scheduled an extended range package. This should increase the aircraft's capabilities to a cool 1,900nm, thus far extending its current maximum trip of Innsbruck to Malaga. \rWhen conversation turns to the Falcon 900, Lener says: "We've had this aircraft since new and over the years, we have had long experience with the Falcon 20, the Falcon 50 and since 1986, the Falcon 900.\r"This aircraft has a very nice interior with warm, bright, natural colours and a kind of Japanese style.\r"We fly this aircraft frequently for a British broker, we fly lots of leading German and Spanish business executives and have flown many a celebrity, like Andrew Lloyd Webber. He was extremely satisfied. \r"The longest range we have ever flown with this aircraft is from Teterboro to Innsbruck. In the other direction, it depends of course on the conditions."\rAs things stands at present, Tyrolean Jet Service is experiencing nearly the same charter results for the Falcon 900 as it is for the Dornier 328Jet. As Lener says, however, \r"we must fly more often with the Dornier 328Jet in comparison to the Falcon 900 [to make the same amount of money]."
