Improved 604 avionics fly
Bombardier is to upgrade its Challenger 604 Pro Line 4 avionics package, beginning with deliveries of 'green' aircraft early in 2001. President of Bombardier, Business Aircraft, Robert Gillespie said: "The avionics upgrade is a clear indication of our commitment to continuously improve our current aircraft models. The changes that are being introduced capitalise on the service experience of the Challenger 604. They are designed to improve current performance and to offer functionality, both as standard and optional features."

They are designed to improve current performance and to offer functionality, both as standard and optional features," Gillespie added.\rFlight testing of the Pro Line 4 package has started at Bombardier's flight test centre in Wichita, Texas while the package will be retrofitted on in-service aircraft through service bulletins. John Race, director of flight operations for Challenger and Global Express observed that many of the improvements are aimed at reducing pilot workload during both normal and critical operation. \rAmong the standard upgrades are automatic look-up of take-off and approach and landing speeds, missed approach speeds and weight limits, runway lengths and climb gradients, and FMS blending of actual observed wind and entered wind to improve mission planning. \rThe upgraded package will also improve information required for North Atlantic waypoint reporting. The FMS will provide first position report page, all the information needed to make a standard position report according to ATC requirements. \rOptional features include a three-dimensional profile map with a geographical presentation of a combined vertical and lateral profile along the flight plan, long-range and high speed cruise speeds, and expanded flight data recorder function.
