BFGoodrich Avionics Systems announced the introduction of its new LandMark terrain awareness and warning systems (TAWS) at NBAA. LandMark is a remote processor that offers predictive warning functions using position data from the aircraft's GPS receiver, aircraft flight configuration and an internal terrain and obstacle database. The device issues visual and aural warnings of imminent contact with the ground for excessive rates of descent, negative climb rate or altitude loss after take-off and altitude below 500 feet. \rThe equipment also displays obstacles and runways that are 2,000 feet or greater, and is said to provide a continuous, colour, "bird's eye" view of terrain surrounding the aircraft's position. BFGoodrich expects certification in December 2000. \r"As advancements continue towards free flight, situational awareness will play a vital role in the safe future of our national aerospace system," said Wes Perry, vp and general manager at BFGoodrich Avionics. "LandMark provides an affordable solution for Part 91 and Part 135 operators looking to comply with the recently proposed FAA TAWS class B mandate and provides the ideal enhancement to a pilot's situational awareness."
