Garmin unveils G5000 Prime integrated flight deck

Garmin today introduced G5000 Prime, its most advanced integrated flight deck for Part 25 transport aircraft. Built for the demands of transport category aircraft and powered by Garmin innovations, G5000 Prime is designed to simplify operations and enhance safety. The robust, intuitive, all-touchscreen flight deck is designed to feature more displays and display layout options to provide additional information in busy airport environments. G5000 Prime is highly flexible and customisable, and its open architecture supports advanced system integration, enabling operators to rapidly deploy new technologies. The avionics suite also incorporates additional systems and capabilities, providing access to more aircraft-level systems within the avionics and adding reliability and high dispatch availability.

“With over 30,000 integrated flight decks in the field, Garmin has paved the way for innovation and set a new standard for integrated avionics. The G5000 Prime avionics suite is completely optimised for crewed operations and includes deeper systems integration and advanced automation and connectivity features that will reduce crew workload and streamline workflow in the cockpit,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president, aviation sales, marketing, programmes and support.

G5000 Prime features expansive touchscreen primary display units (PDU) with edge-to-edge, sunlight-readable, fingerprint-resistant glass, redefining expectations in cockpit aesthetics and functionality. The vibrant displays include multiple performance enhancements such as quadruple the memory and gigabit system connectivity that is up to 100 times faster than previous generation flight decks. New, faster multi-core processors more than double the processing power, leveraging Garmin's experience certifying multi-core technology for civil and military aviation markets as early as 2017. Additionally, higher display refresh rates provide crisp, smooth animations and an impressively responsive and fluid experience.

Complementary secondary display units (SDU) provide data entry and system control, with the added capability to display multi-function applications. The high-resolution SDUs boast a 40% increase in screen area over prior Garmin touch controllers.

G5000 Prime has a crew-centred user interface that is designed to streamline workflows and help crews quickly assess information. The context-sensitive layouts, alerts and more all provide pilots a seamless platform that can enhance situational awareness and operational efficiency.

The advanced multi-touch touchscreen interface is capable of recognising up to 10 touchscreen inputs at once, allowing both the pilot and copilot to interact with the same display simultaneously. The enhanced multi-touch technology also enables on-screen hand stabilisation, allowing pilots to give precise touchscreen inputs while simultaneously resting their fingers on the display. Support for dedicated control devices allows for intuitive physical control of commonly used functions through Garmin-designed products and third-party cursor control devices (CCD).

G5000 Prime provides enhanced flight management system (FMS) tools like the Modified Flight Plan, which allows pilots to use both the PDU and SDUs to provide a side-by-side graphical preview of flight plan changes, including performance calculation comparisons or what-if scenarios. To further ease information management, the Window Manager feature allows pilots to configure app display, window sizing and more across the entire flight deck from one SDU. The Window Manager also provides multiple preset options that can configure all displays with one command, eliminating the need for operators to manually configure each window for various phases of flight.

Leveraging advanced automation capabilities, G5000 Prime is designed to enhance safety in high pilot workload environments. During initialisation, pilots can elect to set up an Emergency Return function, which simplifies pilot responses to in-flight emergencies shortly after takeoff. Safety technologies such as Emergency Descent Mode and Garmin autothrottles further ensure automation is available to assist crews in every phase of flight. Additionally, G5000 Prime integrates key aircraft performance, takeoff and landing data (TOLD) and load planning applications from the AeroData portfolio of products, allowing for a seamless operational integration and reducing crew workload during preflight and initialisation.

Garmin's terminal safety solutions add even more capabilities to G5000 Prime-equipped aircraft. Runway Occupancy Awareness (ROA) technology analyses GPS and ADS-B traffic information relevant to the airport's runways and taxiways to assess and alert the flight crew of a possible runway incursion or collision. ROA builds upon Garmin's other terminal safety solutions including Runway Overrun Awareness and Alerting System (ROAAS), 3D SafeTaxi and Garmin SurfaceWatch. Additionally, Taxiway Routing provides automated route guidance on the 2D navigational maps and 3D Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) depictions.

G5000 Prime supports an array of connectivity capabilities, including use of the GDL 60 datalink to offload diagnostics and aircraft health information for maintenance or dispatch teams to use. With Connext global datalink services, operators can receive worldwide satellite weather coverage, voice calling, email and text messaging to the cockpit. G5000 Prime also supports global airspace modernisation initiatives, including FAA Data Comm and Link 2000+ CPDLC applications, FANS 1/A+, ACARS – and advanced performance-based navigation (PBN). Backed by proven reliability from over 30,000 Garmin flight decks in the field, and new modular, easy-to-interchange LRU designs, G5000 Prime is designed to keep fleets flying in the most demanding operational environments.

Aircraft delivering with G5000 Prime will be announced by aircraft manufacturers.
