Inaccurate emissions data monitoring may cost a small airline €1 million

ETS Aviation, specialists in aviation emissions monitoring, reporting and verification software and support services, says that inaccuracies or errors in monitoring emissions data could lead to aircraft operators paying more than they should for emissions and getting less than they should in carbon credits. The average cost of European Union allowances (EUAs) is estimated to be upwards of €30 per tonne of CO2 or about €100 per flight hour for a business jet and €300 for a medium-sized airliner. The total cost depends on the size of operator, but even a small airline with a fleet of six aircraft emitting 150,000 tonnes of CO2 per year with annual emissions estimated at €4.5 million could lose up to €1 million over the reporting cycle for 1–2% error in monitoring emissions data. Inaccuracies or errors can lead to further fines and penalties as well as additional auditing expenses with the verifier.

This data needs to be 100% accurate, without gaps or errors. Developing in-house systems is expensive, requires constant administrative support and is usually a "quick fix" rather than a well-constructed tool custom-designed for the task. Operators need low-cost and highly effective methods to record and manage the data.

This is why ETS Aviation linked their AVIATION FOOTPRINTER™ system to Flight Operation System (FOS), developed by Computer Technologies for Aviation (CTA). CTA develops, markets and supports a comprehensive flight operations management system for corporate, government, aircraft management and charter, repair stations and regional airlines operations. Both provide operators with an established method to harvest ETS data with minimum additional cost."
