Duncan Aviation adds structural welding capabilities

Duncan Aviation is pleased to announce the company's machining and welding department has received certification in the AWS D1.2/D1.2M Structural Welding Code - Aluminum. This certification was earned by documenting and demonstrating proficient and consistent structural welding processes and procedures and expanding current in-house welding capabilities.

A new, high-tech aluminum MiG wire-feed welder with a digital function display has been purchased to perform structural welding projects. The feedback and analysis from the onboard computer monitors all weld variables, adjusting the arc and wire feed in real-time to the technician operating it, resulting in a more consistent weld. It also saves and stores welding settings for future use, reducing set-up time.

The Duncan Aviation machining and welding team serves all in-house welding and machining needs with the AWS D17.1/D17.1M code for Aerospace application. With the addition of the structural welding code, Duncan Aviation can now repair damaged scaffolding, fixtures and stairs used by internal teams to increase safety measures. There is also the expectation of growth and the ability to provide structural welding services to regional companies in other industries.

The idea and motivation for obtaining this new certification came from an OEM in a different industry. The company approached Matt Gudgel, Duncan Aviation machine shop team leader, asking him to consider acquiring this new capability, noting that it found it challenging to find local/regional welding resources certified to perform this structural weld.

Currently, one Duncan Aviation welder/machinist, Marcus McMeekin, is certified in this welding code. There are plans to add more certified machinists by the end of the year.
