Munich Airport fast gaining the status of a European logistics center

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Munich Airfreight Center took place today. In response to the ongoing cargo boom, Munich Airport is again increasing its capacity. With the construction of a new building for freight forwarding companies flanked by a car park right next to the existing freight facilities, FMG (the Munich Airport operating company) is laying the groundwork to retain the ability in the future to cope smoothly with the massive growth in airfreight volume. Between 1992 and 2006 Munich Airport quadrupled the volume of airfreight handled from barely 100,000 to more than 400,000 metric tons. "Compared with our first year of operation, airfreight tonnage has increased in the space of 15 years by a whopping 314 percent," said FMG Executive Vice President Walter Vill at the groundbreaking ceremony.
