Honeywell keeps Finmeccanica AW139 helicopters mission-ready with predictive maintenance system

Honeywell has received a supplemental type certificate approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency to install its model 1134 Health and Usage Monitoring System on Finmeccanica AW139 helicopters. Having already received Federal Aviation Administration supplemental type certificate approval, Honeywell's Health and Usage Monitoring System can now be installed on more AW139 helicopters around the world.

This system, also known as HUMS, allows operators to perform rotor track and balance and continuously monitor key mechanical rotating components and subsystems on their helicopters, enabling early detection and prediction of potential problems before they occur. By practicing this style of predictive maintenance, operators can achieve greater safety and lower operating costs while minimizing unscheduled maintenance.

The exceedance alerts can also be sent in real time via satellite communications link using Honeywell's Sky Connect Tracker III product. The transmission cost is minimal as the message is sent in a short data burst similar to a text message.

Operators using the Honeywell HUMS onboard systems have reported a four to five percent increase in helicopter availability, 30 percent reduction in mission aborts, 20 percent reduction in maintenance test flights, and five to 10 percent reduction in scheduled maintenance costs, providing a documented return on investment.
