Aircraft charter and maintenance company, Woodgate Aviation, is to almost double the size of its new hangar in a further £1.5 million investment at Belfast International Airport.

A planning application to build a 27,000-sq ft extension has been lodged with Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council after enjoying 'a year of unprecedented growth' across all main business sectors.

Woodgate Aviation will create five new engineering and office jobs as part of the ambitious expansion plan. 

Work will get underway on Phase Two once the company receives planning approval. The project will bring to £3.5 million the amount invested by Woodgate Aviation over a three-year period. 

Woodgate Aviation managing director, John Keen, says Phase Two is demand-led after the 33,000 sq. ft Phase One hangar became fully committed well ahead of growth projections.

Mr Keen said: “In addition to our own aircraft, and the certified maintenance work we carry out for a growing number of clients, we've also managed to secure new jet aircraft business with every likelihood that more will follow in early 2016. 

“It has been a year of unprecedented growth for the company. So positive has the response been to our new hangar operation that we will shortly require additional space. Virtually doubling what we have reflects the upturn we are seeing in the market coupled with very focused international marketing drive we embarked upon. 

“In the aviation world, we're recognised for the fact that we now offer the most modern, integrated and secure facilities available on the island of Ireland. Our track record is built on our professionalism and competitiveness which are highly prized by clients and suppliers alike.” 

Belfast International Airport managing director, Graham Keddie, has welcomed the expansion, and says it will greatly enhance the attractiveness of the airport to the very lucrative private aircraft market.

Mr Keddie said: “Woodgate Aviation has shown what can be achieved, and the company is to be applauded for its financial commitment and belief in the market. To go ahead with Phase Two even before Phase One has had its official opening tells you everything you need to know about a company that's going places. 

“Woodgate Aviation is an integral part of the overall airport operation where we have the capacity to easily cope with increased demand.

“Taken together with the airport retail and forecourt development announced recently, this investment will bring to almost £6 million the sum that has been committed by private companies. Indeed, when added to our own spending plans for 2016, the figure increases to £10 million.”
