The Maritime Rescue helicopter base at Gijón celebrated its 20th anniversary on 21st November. The emotional ceremony was attended by the mayor of Gijón, Ms. Carmen Moiryón as well as representatives from the state administration such as the Navy and Civil Defense, the head of the Maritime Authority and the head of the Jovellanos Centre.
The celebration marks 20 years of a service and crew which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, responding to all kinds of missions and safeguarding lives at sea, protecting the environment and supporting maritime traffic. They are true heroes, who risk their lives to save others in harsh, extreme conditions. Over the past two decades, 24 crewmembers have carried out 700 missions, successfully rescuing 500 people and completing 5,400 flight hours. Worth particular mentions are Pedro France, winchman and rescuer for 20 years, just like Jose Ramon Cruz. Pablo Lopez, a fellow winchman, also received his award for 15 years of service at the base. These men have participated “in some of the most talked about rescues” said Enrique Nogueroles, director of operations at INAER Spain.
The event was given added importance as the Helimer Cantábrico base was awarded the “Silver Medal of Merit of the City of Gijón”. The award is given out every year by the city council to recognise individuals and services whose values help support and develop the city and who represent safety, education, professional endeavour, and solidarity and community spirit.
"The rescue helicopter has strong roots here and Gijón would be lost without this base. We are so proud to have you hear, because you are what makes this city what it is,” said the Mayor. With unanimous approval of the award application looking likely, the ceremony should take place next June, to coincide with the feast day of St Peter, patron saint of the city.
INAER would like to congratulate its colleagues for their years of service and for this well-deserved recognition of their hard work and tireless dedication to the good of the community.
