Press Release
Issued by Lufthansa Technik.
May 22, 2013
At EBACE 2013 Lufthansa Technik will exhibit the latest generation of its nice® HD cabin management & in-flight entertainment (CMS/IFE) system. The highly integrated nice® HD system is based on a wired and wireless high-bandwidth Ethernet network, and offers many industry "firsts" via its turn-key Audio Video on Demand (AVoD) solution.
A color animated graphical user interface (GUI) is standard at each seat and the system allows a dynamic VIP seat assignment. In addition, the nice HD offers a universal web-application for smartphones/tablets for system control and content management, which works on Android, Apple, Windows 8 devices. Other features include telephony integration at each seat with call alert and auto muting as well as bluetooth 2.1connectivity also at each seat.
Also the embedded and wireless networked distribution is compatible with all leading mobile devices (Apple, Android, Windows 8). This includes Push/Pull wireless distribution – pulling content from the nice HD Media Center (content server) to a personal device and pushing content to the embedded system display from a personal device. And it allows each person in the aircraft to watch their individually chosen movie at their own speed.
For infotainment Lufthansa Technik offers a 3D moving map integrated with 2D interactive maps at each seat. The 2D views can be manually selected, zoomed, panned and rotated.
nice® HD offers a embedded digital rights management (DRM) framework for studio licensed content – required by major Hollywood studios. To augment its AVoD solution for the nice® HD CMS/IFE operators, a licensed content service will be made available for nice® HD equipped aircraft. The service will include early window (not yet released), new release, and classic movies, as well as documentaries, short programming, kids' entertainment, etc. The authorized content will include private and public non-theatrical licenses and will provide legal distribution of content for private, fractional, charter, and corporate coverage. Each seat can be equipped with HDMI and USB ports for media encoding and streaming – approved and licensed by the sanctioning body.
Developed with Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT) and manufactured under Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) procedures, all nice components are both reliable and easy to maintain.
The Lufthansa Technik Innovation Business Unit is developing this service together with its partner Panasonic within its Joint Venture IDAIR.
