AMSTAT releases latest market update report showing more improvement in business aviation market

According to AMSTAT, the leading provider of corporate aviation fleet and operator information, during Q2 of 2011, the worldwide business jet and turbo-prop markets demonstrated two themes. Firstly, market metrics continue to show the promising trends of contracting pre-owned inventories and of steadily increasing transaction activity. Secondly, that the market has still not recovered to historically average conditions.

During the most recent quarter, 2.6% of the active fleet of worldwide business jets changed hands via resale retail transactions (versus 2.4% in Q1). The same report goes on to add that this metric is inching closer to the 20-year average of 3.0% per quarter. In the turboprop market, resale retail transaction activity held steady at 2.3% of the fleet in Q2 (versus 2.2% in Q1). The 20-year average for turboprop transaction activity is 3.2% of the fleet per quarter.

The report goes on to highlight that 13.9% of the worldwide fleet of business jets is for sale, compared to 14.2% just one quarter ago. Although jet inventories remain high, their 20-year average is 12.6%; the bizjet for sale inventory is now at the lowest point seen since September 2008. In the turboprop market, for sale inventory decreased from 11.6% to 11.1% over the same period, bringing it in line with the 20- year average of 11.2%.

When asked whether we should look at the business aviation market as half empty or half full, Tom Benson, Executive Vice President of AMSTAT noted that this "probably depends on where you feel the global economy as a whole is going from where it is today. Double dip economic conditions will likely cause our industry to fall short of historically normal conditions for quite some time. But unabated improvement in the economy should result in a slow and steady return to normalcy for business aviation".
