United Aviation Services (UAS), the leading provider of trip planning and flight support services (handling, permits, fuel) to over 500 operators worldwide, has announced a new partnership with carbon accountancy experts ETS Aviation to offer its clients a cost-effective EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) service called ETS LINKED™.
Designed exclusively for the aviation industry, ETS LINKED™ is an affordable and complete carbon accountancy solution.
As well as completely streamlining the recording, reporting and verification of flight data, ETS LINKED™ will help to maximise carbon credit allocation, saving operators millions of euros over the reporting cycle. Accurate, simple to use and secure, it promises to be the one-stop ETS service for flight operators of all sizes.
"This is great news for thousands of operators worldwide who are affected by new EU ETS requirements for aviation, which is peppered with compliance and regulatory issues," explained Nick Cavell, Business Development Director of UAS.
"In addition to the administrative challenges, these regulations bring new financial risks. Failure to submit tonne/kilometre reports or lack of accuracy in reporting data could cost a medium-sized airline millions of euros over the reporting cycle," said Mr Cavell.
Free carbon certificates are a major upside of the scheme and will be calculated according to 2010 flight emissions levels and then multiplied by the 8-year reporting cycle, from 2012 through to 2020. Errors and inconsistencies can also incur substantial fines but the loss of free carbon certificates could be a much larger financial risk. In fact, the value of just 1,000 airline flights could be worth upwards of €3 million in free carbon certificates for the reporting cycle 2012-–2020.
However, Mr Cavell believes that many operators are unprepared and lacking the resources required to deal with the full scale of the regulatory compliance.
"Few have the time and money they need to establish a system which measures, records and reports fuel usage with 100% accuracy and organises and presents the data in such a way that the auditing is straightforward," said Mr Cavell.
"The administration time and regulatory knowledge required plus day-to-day internal auditing of DIY systems is a large enough burden, particularly for the smaller operators. But by taking the hassle out of compliance, ETS LINKED™ will significantly lighten the load of many busy flight departments.
"With ETS LINKED™ either UAS or the operator can simply upload flight data and the system organises everything, separating information into flight lines, which are stored in a dedicated database.
"Crucially, ETS LINKED™ also locates any errors, enabling corrections to be made before the annual emissions and tonne/kilometre reports are produced, with the click of a mouse.
"What's more, ETS LINKED™ also promises a massive opportunity to simplify and streamline the verification process because operators can upload flight records as support documentation and benefit from a secure online connection to aviation verification service providers such as BSI.
"This feature alone promises additional new benefits and cost-efficiencies with electronic data and remote auditing."
Mr Cavell explained how this incredible system works.
"ETS LINKED™ is powered by ETS AVIATION FOOTPRINTER™, a unique and custom-designed piece of software, which does all the hard work and yet is incredibly easy to use," said Mr Cavell.
He added: "To provide the additional help many of our clients will need, throughout what promises to be a challenging decade, we are also making the expertise of ETS Aviation consultants available online.
"ETS Aviation consultants will act as a virtual ETS department for any UAS client and help with administration, regulatory issues and pre-verification services."
"These ETS experts will help each of our clients meet compliance by reporting any possible process anomalies, flight data gaps and inconsistencies back to the operator for corrective action," said Mr Cavell.
