International Communications Group introduces eight port fast Ethernet e-switch

nternational Communications Group (ICG) has introduced a fast Ethernet switch that will accommodate and provide power for up to eight Ethernet devices commonly used with aeronautical applications. The ICG e-Switch will provide unmanaged "plug and play" devices such as EFB's, handsets, cameras and wireless access points with basic capabilities such as store and forward data packets, automatic Medium Dependent Interface Crossover (MDI-X) support and 10/100 megabytes per second (Mbps) auto speed sensing. It will also provide auto-sensing "Power Over Ethernet" as an 802.3af power source (PSE) .

"This e-Switch has been approved for aircraft installations and ICG has received FAA Parts Manufacturing Authority (PMA) permitting the e-Switch to be delivered with a Federal Aviation Administration 8130-3 Airworthiness Approval Tag that indicates it is certified for commercial delivery. The e-Switch has been installed and certified on a Cathay Pacific B777 airliner, to serve as a connection and distribution system for multiple EFBs and other Ethernet devices. It also serves to alleviate the emerging security concerns expressed by the regulatory agencies, by providing a closed and secure environment for connection of aircraft Ethernet devices and flight deck EFB operations. Its light weight and compact size make it installable in virtually any aircraft location, whether it's in an electronics bay or in the cabin. It is yet another way ICG is extending the availability of an iP architecture and network operations to an airborne environment," said Armin Jabs, Chief Operating Officer of ICG.
